Milton Glaser is to design what Donald Trump is to real estate—he is the Steven Spielberg of designers. (Almost everyone knows the I Love NY logo—the designer’s brainchild and deemed the most reproduced logo of all time.) Because of his inexhaustible intellectual and artistic prowess, Glaser has made his name one of the most revered in design.
Born in 1929, Glaser attended the Cooper Union Art School and went on to study in Bologna, Italy, at the Academy of Fine Arts with a Fulbright Scholarship. During his esteemed career, he has created over 300 posters for various clients in the visual, performance, theatrical and musical arts, as well as commercial industries. In 1954, he was instrumental in developing Pushpin Studios, and in 1968 co-created New Yorker magazine with Clay Felker. Walter Bernard and Glaser co-founded the mega design firm WBMG, which helped overhaul the pages of several well known newspapers and magazines such as The Washington Post and Time. He also founded Milton Glaser, Inc., a New York design institution that has been highly influential in its involvement with city programs, renovations, and projects.
Not only is Glaser an exemplary graphic designer, but he has also had an influential hand in both interior and environmental design. In 1975, the New York Historical Commission hired Glaser to refurbish the observation deck and restaurant of the World Trade Center. In addition, he was commissioned to create a logo for the World Health Organization in its campaign to promote AIDS awareness.
