Job Description:
Architects plan and design standing structures. Most
architects choose to specialize in either residential
spaces or commercial spaces, and are contracted by clients
to research materials and present comprehensive and
well-planned solutions. Architects must first and foremost
consider the function of the space, as well as the safety
of all persons who enter, and then integrate the client’s
preferences for materials, colors, and finishes into
blueprints and presentation graphics. Architects coordinate
with local governments, structural engineers, and contractors
to execute their designs. Many architects work collaboratively
at firms where intermediate and senior designers each
have a specialty - surfaces, plumbing fixtures, lighting,
etc.
Salary Range: The median salary for
architects is $58,600, though this can vary depending
on the client, the region, and the scope of the project.
Principal architects (those who start their own firms)
can command executive-level salaries, and control subordinate
staff.
Education: Degrees in architecture are required,
and practicing architects must be licensed by the state,
ensuring that they are aware of building codes and standards
for safety. Architects must have knowledge of building
materials, construction, and surface materials. Experience
in business, marketing, or other areas of design wil
also help a future architect in his educational pursuit.
Outlook: The US Department of Labor predicts
17% growth in the architecture industry between 2002
and 2012.
Personality Traits: Architecture is
an overwhelmingly spatial field, requiring the ability
to see an empty lot and visualize a skyscraper in its
place. Architects must be proficient with numbers and
measurements, as well as being able to think critically
and solve problems efficiently. Active listening is
the cornerstone of architecture, as architects must
understand the client’s needs and create effective
design solutions.
