Job Description: Art
educators teach courses in fine art or applied arts,
including painting, ceramics, or crafts. Art educators
have a unique ability to inspire and nurture the creative
pursuits of their students, and are often very creative
people themselves.
Salary Range: Art educators
can earn between $48,000 and $64,000 annually depending
on the region and the institution they are employed
by. Those with practical experience in the art world,
higher degrees, or related skills will be compensated
accordingly.
Education: Depending
on the scope of their work, art educators must be credentialed
teachers (for work in the public schools), or have graduate
degrees (for work at the university level.) Many art
educators are practicing artists who have transitioned
into teaching in order to supplement their income or
inspire a new generation. While not required, degrees
in fine art are desirable. For working with children,
knowledge of developmental stages and effective methods
for communicating with children is crucial.
Outlook: The US Department
of Labor predicts 38% growth in this industry between
2002 and 2012. Recent cuts in arts and music education
in the public schools are being reconsidered, as school
administrators learn the important role these programs
play in students’ lives.
Personality Traits: Art
educators must be patient people with the ability to
instruct, demonstrate, and constructively critique the
work of their students. An interest in public speaking
and the art world are crucial to ensuring that students
receive the best experience possible.
Career Path: Artist >
Teacher’s Assistant > Art Educator > Art
Professor, University.
