Job Description: Architectural
drafters use sophisticated design software like AutoCAD©
to prepare detailed drawings. Blueprints created using
this software can include building floorplans, lighting
plans, furniture plans, and construction drawings for
furniture builders. Knowledge of building materials
and properties, and design techniques, and engineering
concerns are key, as CAD-based blueprints are technical
documents that go from the architect to the contractor
or vendor to be built.
Salary Range: The median
salary for CAD drafters is $38,200, though this can
vary depending on the clientele and the scope of the
project. CAD drafters can find employment at architectural
firms, interior design firms, CAD-based drawing firms
(for architects who outsource their drawings), or find
freelance opportunities.
Education: While not expressly required,
many CAD drafters have degrees in architecture, interiors,
or computer aided design, as well as an interest in
architecture and construction. In degree programs such
as these students will learn industry-approved design
and modeling software and standards for specifications
that they might not otherwise have access to.
Outlook: The US Department
of Labor predicts 4 - 5% growth in this industry between
2002 and 2012. Growth has slowed somewhat as “traditional”
hand drafters learn to use design software, however
CAD drafters who remain up-to-date on the latest software
releases can parlay their skills into teaching or technical
support for CAD drafters.
Personality Traits: Computer
Aided Design requires long stretches of time sitting
at a computer and inputting hand-drawn blueprints. People
with an interest in geometry, mathematics, and spatial
representation fare well in this industry, as do people
with an affinity for computers in general. CAD drafting
is a technology-based industry, but can have an impact
on all aspects of design and construction.
Career Path: CAD

> Principal Architect
