Cartoonist

Job Description: Cartoonists are responsible for creating original artworks using a wide variety of media and techniques. Depending on their speciality or emphasis, a cartoonist may be required to collaborate with writers and art directors to ensure a common design objective is met. One of the most sought-after job for cartoonists is a comic strip in a national or local newspaper. Cartoonists can also find employment at large production companies like Disney© or Pixar©.

Salary Range: The median salary for cartoonists is $37,000 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Compensation may vary depending upon the services rendered and the scope of the project.

Education: While not expressly required, degrees in illustration, fine art, media, and even creative writing will be beneficial to the emerging cartoonist. Experience drawing a comic strip for your local or college paper and a portfolio showcasing your unique voice will aid in selling your talent.

Outlook: The US Department of Labor predicts 17% industry growth between 2002 and 2012. In recent years cartoons “for adults” have gained popularity and generated a whole new genre. Cartoons like Southpark© have led to a resurgence of interest in a classic medium. Additionally, advances in technology have led to the creation of computer animated films, which have garnered critical acclaim worldwide.

Personality Traits: Cartoonists must be able to think creatively. Attention to detail and patience are also required, as it may take several drafts of a drawing in order to achieve just the right look. Comic strips usually involve humorous anecdotes, jokes, and punchlines, so a sharp wit and sense of humor will be an asset to anyone looking for a career as a newspaper comic.
