Florist

Job Description: Floral designers work to create interesting displays and arrangements of live or artificial flowers. Floral designers usually open their own establishments and create beautiful bouquets for holidays, weddings, retail, and corporate settings, or even every day purchasers who just like flowers. Depending upon the scope of their knowledge and training, floral designers may offer demonstrations, delivery services, or expand their inventory to include gifts, sundries, and party supplies.

Salary Range: The median salary for floral designers who own their own establishments is $20, 200, though compensation can vary tremendously based on the region, quality of the product, and clientele.

Education: Knowledge of color, proportion, height, and scale are crucial to creating visually appealing floral arrangements. While not required, floral designers with degrees in presentation, exhibition design, and even fine arts will have the necessary visual and critical thinking skills to accurately select and arrange pleasing displays. As most floral shops are sole proprietorships, training in business, management, and wholesale purchasing is crucial to ensure the smooth functioning of the establishment.

Outlook: There are many options for trained floral designers, especially those with a proven track record of creating stunning displays and providing a high level of service. Floral designers who work in the wedding industry, entertainment industry, or with corporate partners have the ability to create varied projects. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts 12% growth in this industry between 2002 and 2012, as the continuing emergence of the internet and new media create new opportunities for floral designers to market their talents.

Personality Traits: Upbeat people with a passion for flowers and an eye for color fare well in this industry. Floral designers have a unique capacity to make people happy by creating beautiful, tasteful arrangements that their customers will be proud to display in their homes or give as gifts. Floral designers who deal in weddings must have the ability to listen and communicate effectively so that they can ensure that their product is in keeping with the overall aesthetic and theme of the rest of the ceremony.

Career Path: Floral Sales Assistant > Manager > Florist > Wedding Consultant/Planner.
