Job Description: Graphic designers use design software to create signage, displays, corporate identity (logos), and any other promotional materials. Graphic designers may also employ traditional art techniques, the use of photography, and the use of video. An appreciation for the unity of images and text is required, as is an understanding of media production, communications, and marketing. Graphic designers are responsible for disseminating information as specified by their clients, and using typography and images to capture the essence of the product or service.
Salary Range: Salaries for graphic designers can range from $37,000 to $50,000 annually, depending on the popularity and marketability of their personal design aesthetic. Freelance graphic designers charge for their services hourly or per project.
Education: While not expressly required, degrees in graphic design, visual communications, or media design will expose graphic designers to a host of techniques and visual principles. Students will learn industry-approved software, as well as learning about technical and production concerns.
Outlook: The emergence of the internet has created an entirely new forum for graphic designers. Most consumers interact differently with online media than printed media, and as such designers who specialize in motion graphics for web applications are highly sought after. The US Department of Labor predicts 22% growth between 2002 and 2012, as both traditional and non-traditional media gain prominence.
Personality Traits: Graphic designers must be creative, freethinkers with the ability to brainstorm and come up with various ideas. The ability to visualize the final product is crucial, as is the written and verbal wherewithal to communicate effectively to the client. Being a graphic designer requires sitting at a computer for as long as it takes to get it “just right,” so those who prefer working independently do well.
