Illustrator

Job Description: Illustrators are responsible for creating original artworks using a wide variety of media and techniques. Depending on their speciality or emphasis, an illustrator may be required to collaborate with writers and art directors to ensure a common design objective is met. Freelance illustrators work on a variety of projects, including children’s books, package design, or signage. Forensic illlustrators work with law enforcement (police sketch artists and courtroom sketch artists).

Salary Range: The median salary for illustrators is $37,000 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Compensation may vary depending upon the services rendered and the scope of the project. Entreprenurial illustrators may do freelance work for a variety of clients, charging hourly rates, (anywhere from $8.00 - $24.00 per hour), royalties, or a flat-fee.

Education: Degrees are not required for many careers in illustration; the greatest selling tool for a fledgling illustrator is a solid portfolio showcasing professional quality works. Higher education in illustration or fine arts will facilitate learning a wider variety of techniques and materials, as well as lead to a greater understanding of the industry at large, which will always appeal to potential employers. An understanding of various materials and their properties and functions is crucial.

Outlook: The US Department of Labor predicts 17% industry growth between 2002 and 2012. As our society becomes increasingly dependent upon technology, a subculture “of the hand” continues to develop - many clients want art that is handcrafted and has a very natural look.

Personality Traits: Illustrators must be able to think creatively. Visualization is tremendously important, as is the ability to ingest and interpret the client’s/art director’s vision and create a suitable solution. Attention to detail and patience are also required, as it may take several drafts of a drawing in order to achieve just the right look.
