Interior Decorator

Job Description: Interior decorators design and furnish interiors for residential projects. Interior decorators must consider the function of the space as well as aesthetic concerns, and integrate the client’s preferences for colors, fabrics, and furniture into a harmonious and pleasing space. Most interior decorators work on smaller projects than interior designers and architects, choosing instead to specialize in the finishing touches (such as furniture and accent pieces.)

Salary Range: Interior decorators earn between $29,000 and $39,000 annually, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, but that can vary based on the region, clientele, extent of design training, and nature of the services offered. Interior decorators typically command lower salaries than trained interior designers.

Education: Degrees are not expressly required, in fact most interior decorators are not formally trained, instead relying on their innate senses of color and proportion. Interior decorators typically have less formal training than interior designers, and are not required to have an understanding of more technical areas such as plumbing, heating and cooling, or building materials. A portfolio of previous work will help potential employers and client’s to understand your personal design style.

Outlook: The US Department of Labor predicts 22% growth between 2002 and 2012. As the home-design market continues to boom, many people switch careers and enter the field of decorating, in an effort to express their artistic talents.

Personality Traits: Interior decorators have a unique ability to influence their client’s everyday lives. Active listening, writing, sketching, and communicating effectively will impact the designer-client relationship and ultimately the success of the project.
