Careers

Photographer

Job Description: Photographers are responsible for arranging scenes, taking pictures, and producing prints. Photographers can specialize in any of a variety of fields, including portraiture, advertising photography, interior photography, fashion photography, or photojournalism.

Salary Range: Qualified photographers can earn between $26,000 and $37,000 annually. As with many other design fields, photographers with proven skill can earn celebrity status and command much higher wages. Many photographers are self-employed as freelancers, and charge either hourly, flat fee, or per print.

Education: For those photographers seeking careers in the journalism industry (newspapers, magazines, online newsmagazines,) degrees in communications, journalism, or english will prove to potential employers that the candidate has an understanding of the relationship between words and pictures. Additionally, students in photography programs will learn all the creative and technical skills necessary to create interesting scenes, photograph them, and develop the prints. Coursework in fine arts, graphic design, and visual presentation will lend the artist further understanding of composition and visual principles.

Outlook: The US Department of Labor predicts 14% industry growth between 2002 and 2012. As the popularity of digital photography continues to boom, many people who are interested in photography can launch full-fledged careers.

Personality Traits: Photographers must have the ability to visualize what a completed photo will look like, and then guide the production to the desired outcome. Some of the most intense photographs are snapped at a moment’s notice, so photographers must be quick-thinkers, willing to experiment and follow their instincts. A certain degree of patience is also highly recommended, as dealing with weather, human subjects, lighting, and even political conditions may effect the final product.

Career Path: Photographer’s Assistant > Advertising Photographer > Freelance Photographer.
