Job Description: Video editors are required to edit movies, soundtracks, and video. With the guidance of the director, cinematographer, and production department, the video editor cuts and arranges parts of the tape in order to achieve a final product in keeping with the director’s vision. Video editors are responsible for ensuring the final product flows smoothly from scene to scene, that all dialogue and sounds are audible, and may also be responsible for conducting test screenings to gauge audience reaction to the product.
Salary Range: The median salary for video editors is $41,800, according to The Bureau of Labor Statistics. In the film and television industry, the bulk of pre- and post-production work occurs in Los Angeles and New York, so salaries may be considerably higher in those areas, as well as jobs being more readily available.
Education: Though not expressly required, degrees in video editing, video production, or film studies will expose emerging video editors to industry-approved programs. Knowledge of communications and media and an affinity for computers and electronics are essential, as the majority of video editing is now achieved with computers.
Outlook: The US Department of Labor predicts 26% growth in this industry over the next seven years. The film industry continues to experience success as emerging technologies like IMAX© and computer animation create new and exciting opportunities for filmmakers.
Personality Traits: Video editors must have the ability to listen carefully, problem solve, and visualize the completed product and then use the best means of getting there. Attention to detail patience, and the ability to think quickly and multitask are crucial.
