Job Description: Video producers, like video editors, are required to work in tandem with the cinematographer and director to create a final product that is in keeping with the director’s vision. Producers are responsible for creative decisions, financial decisions, and for keeping the production on task and on schedule.
Salary Range: The median salary for video producers is $51,900, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The majority of pre- and post-production in the film and television industries is concentrated in Los Angeles and New York; salaries may be higher in these areas.
Education: Degrees in film studies, filmmaking, business, or visual communications will teach fledgling video producers to view the world with a critical eye. Coursework in design, communications, and media production will ensure that producers understand the limits and aims of filmmaking, as well as how to manage and communicate effectively. Exposure to video editing software, camera equipment, and sound equipment will ensure that producers have an understanding of the capabilities of the technology that they will be working with in the future.
Outlook: The US Department of Labor predicts 18% growth in this industry between 2002 and 2012. The film industry continues to flourish as emerging technologies create new opportunities.
Personality Traits: The role of producers is to ensure the smooth functioning of the production, which could mean sourcing talent, rewriting scripts, or allocating funds -- the producer must be able to think quickly and creatively, and above all, problem solve! Attention to detail is key, as mistakes and oversights will surely lead to problems later on in the production.
