Job Description: Visual merchandisers plan and execute product displays in retail and commercial spaces. Visual merchandisers may be responsible for window displays, overall store layout, in-store displays, and signage. Many visual merchandisers work with artists and graphic designers to create signage, and report to a Creative Director, who is responsible for the overall aesthetic. Visual merchandisers need to have an understanding of sales, marketing, and consumer behavior in order to effective and eye-catching displays.
Salary Range: Visual merchandisers can make $22,000 - $33,000 annually, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, though this figure can vary by state. In large metropolitan areas, for example, where retailers must fight to catch the attention of bustling consumers, visual merchandisers with innovative ideas are highly sought after.
Education: For those seeking employment at large department stores, degrees in visual communications, visual merchandising, or exhibition design are required. A prior background in retail sales or management may also prove helpful in understanding consumer behavior. Further skills and abilities include knowledge of tools and installations, the ability to sketch ideas, and an understanding of effective communication methods. Like many design industries, visual merchandising is experience-based; as such a portfolio of past work is probably the visual merchandiser’s greatest selling tool.
Outlook: The US Department of Labor predicts 11% industry growth between 2002 and 2012. As the percentage of wealthy people in the US continues to grow, consumers are demanding fashionable and functional spaces that allow them to shop with ease and comfort.
Personality Traits: Visual merchandisers must be big-picture thinkers. In many visual merchandising situations, there are no limits on what is possible -- motorized mannequins, dancing puppets, falling snow -- visual merchandisers must possess the imagination and skills to create all-encompassing worlds.
