Web Designer

Job Description: Web designers create and maintain web pages using industry-approved software and technology. Depending on the nature and scope of the project, web designers may be called upon to write copy, create graphics, or deal with e-commerce aspects. Web designers must be extremely computer-literate, with an understanding of business, visual communications, and the important role that websites play in disseminating information to the public.

Salary Range: Web designers can make upwards of $79,000, annually, according to The US Department of Labor. Web designers with the skills and versatility to create various types of designs (plain text, graphics, motion graphics, templates, etc.) can earn considerably higher salaries. Many web designers prefer to freelance, which affords them the ability to work on a wide variety of projects.

Education: While not required, degrees in graphic design, web design, marketing, and visual communications are highly desirable. Coursework in web animation, business, and communications, as well as practical experience resulting in a portfolio of professional-quality work, will increase the employability of emerging web designers. Students in web design programs will learn technical and creative skills that they might not otherwise have access to.

Outlook: The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts 15% growth in this industry between 2002 and 2012. The web design and e-commerce markets are in a state of continual recovery after the over-saturation of the market that led to partial collapse as the new millennium dawned.

Personality Traits: Web design and maintenance is incredibly detailed and time-consuming, and requires patience, thoroughness, and attention to detail. Web designers are first and foremost creative people, but also must have the attention span and technical knowledge to create, launch, test, and maintain websites.
