Been doodling in the margins of your homework
since as long as you can remember? It just might be
time to get your degree in illustration! Students in
illustration hone their drawing and painting skills
and further develop their creativity. Courses can range
from drawing and painting, to visual communications,
with special emphasis placed on understanding various
styles and techniques. Illustration students are encouraged
to find their personal artistic style through experimenting
with a variety of materials, including fine art techniques
as well as digital media.
The possibilities are endless for trained
illustrators: textile designers, children’s book
illustrators, cartoonists, fine artists - students in
illustration are encouraged to think creatively and
originally. A simple doodle might turn into a cartoon
empire, a series of greeting cards, or a magazine cover!
Like photographs, illustrations have the
power to instantly convey feeling and intent. In the
case of children’s books, especially, illustrations
play a huge role in stimulating the imagination and
bringing the characters to life. Students in illustration
are encouraged to focus on a career-oriented field and
develop a portfolio that demonstrates a high level of
professional skill, as well as showcasing their unique
talent and voice.
There are endless opportunities for future
illustrators! For information on finding a school near
